Galveston County Reports Rise In Vibrio Bacteria Cases

Galveston County Health District Warns of Flesh-Eating Bacteria Outbreak

Rising Vibrio Levels Pose Health Risk

Residents Urged to Take Precautions

The Galveston County Health District has issued a public health alert due to an increase in Vibrio bacteria in local waters. Vibrio is a type of bacteria that can cause infections, including a rare but potentially deadly flesh-eating disease known as necrotizing fasciitis.

According to the health district, there have been several recent cases of Vibrio infections in the area. Symptoms of Vibrio infection can include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and chills. In severe cases, Vibrio can cause blistering and ulceration of the skin, as well as more serious infections such as sepsis and meningitis.

Vibrio bacteria are naturally found in warm coastal waters, and their levels can increase during the summer months. The bacteria can enter the body through open wounds, cuts, or abrasions, or by consuming raw or undercooked seafood.

The health district is urging residents to take precautions to reduce their risk of exposure to Vibrio bacteria. These precautions include avoiding swimming in warm, stagnant water; wearing protective footwear when walking in saltwater; and thoroughly cooking seafood before eating it.

If you experience any symptoms of a Vibrio infection, seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment is crucial to preventing serious complications.
