As spring approaches, Illinois residents brace for an extraordinary natural occurrence: the emergence of massive swarms of periodical cicadas. These remarkable insects, known for their distinctive buzzing song, are set to make their presence known in 2024.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Phenomenon

Periodical cicadas have incredibly long lifespans, spending up to 17 years underground before emerging as adults. This year, two broods (XIII and XIX) will simultaneously emerge in Illinois, creating an event that hasn't been witnessed since 1803 during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson.

Underground to the Surface

For the past 17 years, these cicadas have been living below ground, feeding on tree roots and preparing for their brief appearance above ground. Once the soil temperature reaches a critical point, usually in early May, the nymphs will emerge from their subterranean tunnels and climb up trees or other vertical surfaces.

As the cicadas emerge, they transform into winged adults with bright red eyes and black bodies. Their primary purpose is to mate and lay eggs. The males produce a deafening buzzing sound to attract females, creating a chorus that can be heard for miles around.
